| TRASHIGANG Trashigang Dzong was built in 1667 by Mingyur Tenpa; the third Druk Desi. It was destroyed by a fire and was then rebuilt 3 years later. It is located above the confluence of the Drangme Chu and the Gamri Chu. The entire eastern province was once governed from this Dzong. Gom Kora is a Goemba in this valley that is supposed to have been built sometime in the 15th century. Guru Rinpoche is said to have meditated here and left an impression of his body on a rock at this site. This Goemba also houses a dragons egg, the hoof of Gurus horse, as well as the footprint of a Khandroma (angel). Beside the Goemba stands a large black rock. A cave in this rock was once the meditation site of the Guru. Legend has it, that as the Guru was meditating he was disturbed by a demon. He supposedly rose suddenly, leaving an impression of his pointed hat at the roof of the cave. The Guru reasoned with the demon who agreed to allow him to continue his meditation without any disturbance. Their thumbprints are still visible on the rock, inside the cave. A small passage leads through the cave to an opening below the Goemba. It is believed that sinful people cannot pass through the bends in this passage; and that only virtuous individuals can make it through without getting stuck. There is also a tiny crack at the side of the rock, through which holy water trickles on holy days. Sherubstse College, which is the only English language college in Bhutan, is situated in Kanglung. It was established in, 1964 by the Royal Government of Bhutan. Khaling is a tiny village situated about one and a half hours from Trashigang. It contains a school for the blind that brings together blind children from all over Bhutan to provide them with special education and help. This institution is also under the care of the Royal Government of Bhutan. There is also a textile-weaving unit where they weave mostly vegetable dyed fabric located in Khaling town. |
