MONGAR

Mongar town is located about 6 hours drive East from Bumthang.

Mongar’s original Dzong, Shongar Dzong, tragically burnt down and is now in ruins. The new Mongar Dzong was built in 1953 to replace the old Dzong.

Drametse Goemba is an important Nyingma Monastery but it is quite difficult to access. Although it lies is the Mongar Dzongkhag, it is only accessible from Eastern Bhutan. It was established by, the grand daughter of Pema Lingpa and her husband, Yeshe Gyalpo. This Monastery is the residence of 90 Gomchens (Nyingma monks).
